Sustainability in infrastructure: considerations for ICS Infrastructure Strategies
Ensuring environmental sustainability is a key component of your 10-year infrastructure strategy
This year, Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) in England have been required to develop a 10-year infrastructure strategy that aligns with the NHS Long Term Plan and ensures the efficient use of local healthcare estates. These strategies must consider several key areas, including how they support NHS's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, which is of particular importance as the new Labour government has re-emphasised the need for sustainability and green policies. We've combined our infrastructure expertise with our knowledge of net zero priorities, best practice, and guidance to create a handy infographic to support ICSs embed these sustainability considerations into their strategy.
Sustainability considerations should be embedded into all three core parts of your infrastructure strategy:
1. Where we are now: review where your ICS is currently, including carbon emissions baseline, climate resilience, and existing carbon reduction actions;
2. Where we want to be: outline where your ICS wants to be in 10 years time, which includes estates that are operationally Net Zero, with low-embedded carbon, which are climate resilient, and which bring other co-benefits;
3. How do we get there: detail how your ICS will achieve these goals, including governance, data, resource and funding, and green skills.
