The 'Even Better If' programme is a transformative initiative aimed at improving the culture, values, and behaviours within Critical Care. This comprehensive programme builds on previous efforts to enhance psychological safety and workforce wellbeing, addressing the unique challenges faced by frontline staff in Critical Care.

Enhancing Culture and Psychological Safety in Critical Care: The ‘Even Better If’ Programme

The programme's core objective is to create an environment where all staff can thrive and perform at their best. It involves a series of 20 workshops attended by 353 participants so far, focusing on three key areas: psychological safety; emotional awareness and self-reflection; and clear and compassionate communication. These workshops are designed to foster a growth mindset, increase self-efficacy, and improve overall staff experience.

One of the standout features of the 'Even Better If' programme is its emphasis on practical application. The programme introduced four 'Even Better If' experiments, which were developed based on feedback and insights gathered during the workshops. These experiments aim to address specific challenges identified in the initial engagement phase, such as improving communication during handovers, enhancing support for staff working in side rooms, and fostering better relationships across professional groups.

The programme's impact is evident in the positive feedback received from participants. Many staff members reported that the training sessions were radically different from any other training they had attended before, and provided valuable insights, tools and techniques to improve workplace culture. The programme also highlighted that every interaction matters, reinforcing the idea that small changes in behaviour can lead to significant improvements in the overall work environment.

Looking ahead, the 'Even Better If' programme aims to sustain and expand its impact. Plans for the future include continuing to champion the tools and techniques introduced during the workshops, expanding the training to more staff in the directorate, and maintaining a focus on creating and sustaining culture change. By doing so, the programme hopes to create a lasting positive impact on the wellbeing, recruitment, and retention of staff in Critical Care.

In conclusion, the 'Even Better If' programme represents a significant step forward in enhancing the culture within Critical Care. By focusing on psychological safety, emotional awareness, and clear communication, the programme has laid the groundwork for a more supportive and effective work environment. As the programme continues to evolve, it holds the promise of creating a culture where every interaction truly matters.
