How The PSC is Supporting the UK Smart Data Revolution

At the forefront of realising potential: how we are supporting the next steps for Smart Data.

We are delighted to have seen the passing of the Data Use and Access Bill, which will both unlock huge opportunities to empower UK consumers, as well as help ignite growth and innovation in the economy. We’re supporting the UK Smart Data revolution now, into 2030, and beyond - below we outline how.

How The PSC is Supporting the UK Smart Data Revolution

1. Developing innovative smart data use cases

Drawing upon the work we did for DARE UK, we have innovative techniques for identifying and developing high-value use cases. We believe that within and between sectors, there’s scope for many more use cases to be developed, each offering benefits to customers and the economy more broadly.

“With nearly 12 million users of Open Banking alone, we know from the UK and abroad that Smart Data schemes have the potential to drive significant economic growth and citizen prosperity. At The PSC we are delighted to be at the forefront of helping realise the potential of Smart Data” - Katie Burns, Smart Data Lead & Associate Partner, The PSC

2. Working with the data standards ecosystem

We’ve extensively researched the data standards landscape and understand the opportunities and gaps (Publication from Department of Business and Trade forthcoming). We’ve also learned about the data standardisation that some sectors have already independently been leading, and plan on ‘going with the grain’ of the great work already achieved. We’ll work towards a clear and structured approach to data interoperability, ensuring consistency and compatibility across systems.

3. Defining governance

We’ve helped the Department for Business and Trade to develop robust frameworks for governance, thinking about how actors within and across sectors can efficiently work together to oversee and deliver schemes.

4. Understanding costs and benefits

We want to help government to make the right investments in this field. Using a unique methodology, we recently helped the government to define the costs and benefits of specific use cases.

5. Understanding customer sentiment

As we’ve learned from our work with Smart Data Research UK and multiple health and care clients, we know the public must be bought into any schemes that involve sharing personal data. Whilst Smart Data is a fully consent-driven process, this year we’ll be investigating how understanding and confidence vary for the different types of data use cases.

6. Contributing to the Smart Data community

Smart Data is already a great example of industry and government truly collaborating on shared challenges and opportunities. You may have seen us presenting our work at the Smart Data Council, in addition to taking advantage of events such as those held by The Startup Coalition, we’ll be hosting our own event this Autumn.
