Celebrating the Launch of Cohort 2: Culture of Care Programme Workshop Success
Setting the tone for positive change in mental health care through the Staff Care & Development strand of the Culture of Care Programme.
March 2025 marked a significant milestone for the Culture of Care Programme: Staff Care & Development strand as we hosted two all-day workshops in Birmingham, attended by 198 staff members from 59 inpatient mental health wards as part of Cohort 2.
The programme supports inpatient ward staff – from both NHS and independent providers – to develop team cultures and systems so that people on the ward feel safe and cared for. Through site visits and focus groups, reflective practice training and supervision, skills-based training, and coaching, the offer will focus on high-quality relational care, positive informal interactions on the ward, and psychologically safe environments.

The Staff Care & Development strand is a co-produced developmental space for ward staff to explore their therapeutic interactions with patients. Cohort 2 builds on the success of our first cohort of ward teams, extending the programme's reach and impact. In the workshops, participants were encouraged to develop new strategies for improving team dynamics, increasing job satisfaction, and promoting mental health and well-being across all levels of care. Through these workshops and ongoing support, the programme aims to nurture leadership, resilience, and collaboration among team members, enabling them to implement sustainable, positive changes in their daily work environments.
Absolutely incredible day. The lived experience talks were especially helpful.
The staff and speakers involved were absolutely fantastic. I admire how there was so much lived experience/ expert by experience (EBE) involvement. Stories and feedback from EBEs were so important and I’ll be keeping these in my mind both inside and outside my practice. Thank you all involved for your hard work.
We received fantastic feedback from the workshops; out of 101 survey respondents, 97% said they would recommend the training to others, and 96% said that they learned something new or gained insights that they could apply to advance their organisation's qulity improvement efforts. We have no doubt that the dedication of The PSC team - Sophia Martin, Rachel Robinson, Rachel Lewis, Posy Putnam and Harris Lorie - as well as our partners in the programme has contributed to this exceptional feedback. We look forward to further improving and delivering this training in the future, and we are excited to see how Cohort 2 continues to grow.
NHS England’s two-year Culture of Care programme will support organisations to improve the culture of inpatient mental health, learning disability and autism wards across England. It will ensure patients and staff feel wards are safe, therapeutic and equitable places to be cared for, and fulfilling places to work. Staff Care & Development is one of six strands of the Culture of Care programme, and is delivered by The PSC in partnership with The Institute of Group Analysis, Imroc, InHealth Associates, Virginia Mason Institute, and NHS England.
