Celebrating the Power of Community: Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

Reflecting on our work to improve mental health care both within and by strengthening communities.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, with the theme for this year being ‘Community’ - and the importance of being in a safe and positive community to an individual’s wellbeing. Of course this is something we think about year-round at The PSC - our community is deeply important to us - and we have recently been sharing our insights on psychological safety and the link to high-performing teams on LinkedIn. We are also focused on improving mental health care through working with community mental health providers and supporting inpatient ward teams to strengthen their communities, resulting in better care. Below we share some examples of this and how we work with providers to achieve better outcomes.

Celebrating the Power of Community: Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

Developing a peer engagement and user involvement model for forensic Learning Disability and Autism Services

  • Our work involved co-producing a peer engagement and user involvement model for the commissioning and monitoring of the qualify of these services.
  • Our approach places the lived experience of people with learning disabilities and
autistic people at the centre, with experts by experience involved in workshops and at every stage.
  • The work consisted of looking at how to ensure services are of a good quality and how to use what works well in mainstream forensic adult services.

NHS England's Culture of Care Programme: Delivering the Staff Care and Development Strand

  • The programme supports inpatient mental health ward staff – from both NHS and independent providers – to develop team cultures and systems so that people on the ward feel safe and cared for.
  • Through site visits and focus groups, reflective practice training and supervision, skills-based training, and coaching, our work focuses on building ward communities through high-quality relational care, positive informal interactions on the ward, and psychologically safe environments.

Mental Health Act Quality Improvement Programme - improving mental health care through co-produced, community-led change:

  • Working with 52 NHS inpatient services to implement Mental Health Act reforms by tackling inequalities and empowering staff to co-produce meaningful cultural change.
  • Embedding lived experience throughout the programme to build inclusive, equitable partnerships between patients, carers, and care providers.
